Inside HUFLIS

Capturing students’ daily campus life at the University of Foreign Languages and International Studies in Hue, where campus routines reflect the open and connected rhythms of city life

Tucked within the beauty of Hue, HUFLIS — Hue University’s School of Foreign Languages and International Studies — offers more than just a place to study. It is a campus shaped by movement, routine, and quiet moments of learning, reflecting the city’s open and social way of life. This photo essay explores the physical and social landscape of HUFLIS, capturing how students interact with their surroundings and how daily life unfolds across its classrooms, walkways, and shared spaces and how it mirrors the culture and rhythm of daily life in Hue. The layout of the campus reflects the way of life in the city—largely open air, with seamless connections between indoor and outdoor spaces. Students spend most of their time outside, going between classes and buildings, for lunch at the cafeteria, or just sitting outside classrooms and around campus chatting and hanging out. Unless they are in lectures, taking exams or in the library, the campus functions more like a community plaza rather than a more closed off academic space. The openness of it all mirrors the broader lifestyle of Hue. At the heart of the HUFLIS campus sits a round courtyard with a water feature- a circular pool that acts as both a visual landmark of the campus as well as a central hub. For both students and professors, whether rushing to a lecture or leisurely walking about, it is a lovely space everyone moves through. As for their cafeteria, the eating space is entirely outdoors, shaded by a roof and surrounded by greenery. Here students can enjoy affordable meals together. This informal, communal space fosters that same way of life throughout the entire city, open, breathable, and welcoming. Not far from the central body of water is their library. Despite its small size, it houses an incredible amount of information for students to reference. It also serves as the perfect spot for students to relax, as it has an area for R&R, but also has many tools to help them study. Whilst also having many materials in Vietnamese, they also have international sections like an American section and German among many others, a reminder of the school’s global focus. HUFLIS is more than a collection of academic buildings, it is a lively campus where the energy of the students and the flow and way of city life converge.

The rows of student's motorbikes on campus parallels the common use of motorbikes as the primary mode of transportation for students and locals in Hue.

Students gather at the cafeteria around 11 to eat together, though many will venture out for a meal.

The school offers around 5/6 meal options that don't change often, but do include various drinks and snacks. Just like Hue, there are staple food & meals that are eaten often.

Through the doorways is where they can retrieve their food to then eat in the outdoor area, or wherever on campus they choose.

While this is a widely used option, many students will venture off campus into the city, or even back home for more meal options.

Lectures here at HUFLIS vary in time and topic, as well as size. Just like the city, they offer variety in culture and language.

Students will start their day at 7 am, and in the afternoon, resume at 1 pm.

Mirroring the behavior and schedule of the city, students will retire from classes and campus at 10:45, and return to finish the day at 1 pm. Some students will depart campus to relax at home or a restaurant, while some elect to stay and enjoy the "relaxing center" in the library.

The library within HUFLIS emulates the mixing pot of culture that is Hue with multiple sections dedicated to other countries of study.

Literature in other languages illustrate Hue's embrace of international literature and multicultural identity.

The largest section in the library are the red books of graduate's expectations for their given language or field of study.
